Opportunities

As the fastest growing metropolitan area in the United States for almost two decades, Las Vegas welcomes an average of 72,000 new residents each year. In addition, according to population estimates from the U.S. Census released in April 2007, Clark County is among the top 10 fastest-growing U.S. metro areas from April 1, 2000 to July 1, 2006, experiencing growth of 29.2 percent.

More than 6,000 people each month relocate to Las Vegas, largely due to job growth, which has increased by 7.5 percent in the past year and by 25.3 percent in the past five years. In February 2007, Inc. magazine named Las Vegas "hottest city in America" because of job growth and the region's business-friendly climate.

Job Growth

In the past five years, 26,000 jobs with an economic impact of $5.1 billion have been created in Southern Nevada according to the Nevada Development Authority (NDA). This has occurred because new and existing businesses have selected the area for expansion and growth. This translates into jobs in high-tech, telecommunications and manufacturing industries, not just in the hospitality field.

Economic Diversity

Opportunities abound in many industries. In recent years, many companies have relocated to the area, including firms specializing in high-tech, telecommunications, and manufacturing. Life science and biotech companies are also being recruited to locate here. While gambling and related leisure activities remain the primary driving force for the Las Vegas Valley's seemingly unstoppable growth, the key to maintaining long-term economic stability lies in diversification. Local economic development agencies are working hard to make the Las Vegas are attractive to new industries beyond those directly involved with gaming and hospitality or providing services to it and its employees.
